CEBU, Philippines - The Regional Development Council in Region 7 will endorse to the Department of Transportation and Communications (DoTC) the request to conduct a feasibility study for a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) System service between Cebu City and the Mactan-Cebu International Airport.
RDC Infrastructure Development Committee Chair Emmanuel Rabacal said yesterday the MCIA Authority Board had asked support from the Cebu Provincial Development Council to conduct a feasibility study on the project.
Rabacal said the proposed BRT service aims to provide a safe, convenient and affordable mass transport service between Cebu City and Mactan airport.
RDC-7 said that aside from a growing population, heavy traffic generators in Mactan also include the international airport and several economic zones.
"There is also a mixed-use and high-end real estate development boom in the area. The increased volume of vehicular traffic to and from Mactan Island resulted in worsening traffic congestion especially in the two bridges connecting the two islands," RDC-7 said.
Currently commuters have to take taxis or for-hire-vehicles in going to and from the airport.
"Opting for public utility jeepneys means several transfers have to be made which are unsafe, inconvenient and time consuming," the council said.
