Canadian firms eyeing power projects in Phl

CEBU, Philippines - Philippine companies can well collaborate with Canadian businesses particularly in power generation investments, said a key official of the Embassy of Canada here.

Canadian Ambassador to the Philippines Neil Reeder said Canada has always been a good potential for energy investments particularly in clean energy developments.

“We’re currently encouraging Philippine energy companies to consider Canada as a source of power investments,” Reeder told The FREEMAN during his visit in Cebu Monday for a talk on bilateral relations between Canada and the Philippines.

As the Malampaya field’s natural gas deposit begins to diminish, Reeder noted foreign investors can come in and help local energy firms in exploring other sources of natural gas supply.

The Malampaya project, which is located at the West Philippine Sea, is said to be running out of natural gas and that the government has been looking for a new field in the area.

According to the ambassador, foreign investors from Canada would also want to explore commercial partnerships with local companies here in renewable energy projects.

“We have to be environmentally responsible and venturing into renewable energy is a positive thing,” he said, urging power generation companies to venture into clean energy aside from being always dependent on coal-fired, oil and fossil fuel.

In addition, the foreign official also mentioned a Vancouver-based company is venturing into a waste to energy facility in Mactan Island to solve the solid waste management problems. (FREEMAN)
