Former Chief Justice Hilario Davide Jr. reminded the Supreme Court (SC) that the Philippines is a signatory to the 2003 United Nations Convention Against Corruption (UNCAC) that ensures the existence of the appropriate body to carry out its functions effectively to prevent corruption.

The Senate recently voted 17-0 for the ratification of the UNCAC which introduces a comprehensive set of standards, measures and rules that governments can use to fight corruption.

Although 140 countries signed the Convention, only 79 countries ratified it.

During a recent forum at the Senate, Angara said the UNCAC allows a state to trace and follow the path of stolen money.

"(The UNCAC) is a notable piece of Convention because for the first time there is international consensus," he said.
