Today, January 7, is a very special day for me — it’s my husband and I’s seventh wedding anniversary! It seems like only yesterday when we first met at a campus-based activity organized by our Catholic youth community, CFC Youth for Christ (YFC). Anthony was a mission volunteer then; I was a graduating PT student. We were both at the activity to support our fellow YFC members.

Last weekend, our young family was able to attend the annual Couples for Christ (CFC) Mission Core Weekend Retreat at Camp John Hay in Baguio. It was another inspiring event for me, much like the CFC Leaders Conference at the Araneta Coliseum last January 14, which I wrote about in a previous post. The theme for this year was “The Magnificat,” based on the Canticle of Mary.

I am so grateful to God for using my daughter Rysse as a living reminder of the gift of LIFE. Born at the height of her Mama’s pro-life “career” (if you can call it that!) in Timor, Rysse is truly a gift of LIFE from the Giver of life Himself.

Many young couples will probably be able to relate to what I am going to write about here. When a man and a woman get married, usually the first thing they do is settle down somewhere together. Sometimes, it is in the home of either the husband’s or wife’s family. Other times, if they can afford it, they rent or buy their own place. For most newlyweds, it is an exciting and challenging time, as they start making their own “family nest.”

But there are some newlyweds who don’t go down this path. My husband Anthony and I were among those who didn’t. A month after getting married on January 7, 2006, we left to go on a foreign mission for our Catholic lay community. Our destination? Timor Leste, or East Timor, as it is more commonly known among Filipinos.
