[Summary] => Oriental and Pacific Boxing Federation (OPBF) bantamweight champion Jess Maca of Garcia Hernandez, Bohol, is back in town after repulsing Hiroaki Murakoshi on points in his seventh title defense in Shizuoka, Japan, last Sunday.

The good news is his crown is intact. The bad news is he didn’t get paid his entire purse.

Beating Murakoshi was easy. Getting to Shizuoka wasn’t. It was a horrible trip, said boxing judge Vic Rodriguez who accompanied Maca, his manager Flor Rontal, and matchmaker Jun Sarreal’s son Lovell to Shizuoka.

World Boxing Organization (WBO) No. 1, World Boxing Council (WBC) No. 7, and International Boxing Federation (IBF) No. 5 superflyweight contender Vernie Torres of General Santos City was knocked out by unheralded Julio Coronel of Colombia at 0:52 of the seventh round at the Casino Magic in Bay St. Louis, Mississippi, last Sept. 22.

It was supposed to be a cakewalk for Torres, linked up for a shot at WBO 115-pound champion Pedro Alcazar’s crown.

Scared Of Maca

not_entJess Maca is ranked No. 2 by the World Boxing Council (WBC) in the bantamweight division. His manager Florencio Rontal expects the Bohol mauler to be elevated to No. 1 if he stays active and continues to win. Before the year ends, Rontal predicts WBC champion Veerapol Sahaprom of Thailand will be forced to make a mandatory defense against Maca.

That seems to be the only way for Maca to get ahead because fighters avoid him like the plague. [DatePublished] => 2000-05-25 00:00:00 [ColumnID] => 133272 [Focus] => 0 [AuthorID] => 1804869 [AuthorName] => Joaquin M. Henson [SectionName] => Sports [SectionUrl] => sports [URL] => ) ) )
