The man did not only study volcanoes. He was thoroughly fascinated by them. He had such a profound acquaintance with the archipelago’s active volcanoes that one might suspect he was in love with them.


So in love with them, he devoted his life to them. It was not just an interest in them; it was nearly a mania.
