[Title] => Fighting back against bullying
[Summary] => Kids know best on what parents need to parent about. Running out of topic ideas, I went to my daughter’s room asking her for suggestions. Without hesitation she squealed “bullying.” Oh, how she knows this topic so well. My heart goes out to my two girls who had to deal with school bullies. I teach my kids to be good girls but how should they deal with a bully? I didn’t want them to be the bully nor wanted them to be bullied. I engaged in role-playing where I pretended to be a bully and I taught the girls to be gently firm with their bully. Such tips included but were not limited to ignoring the bully and walking away, not showing anger nor hitting back. Along with these, I continued to develop their confidence by honing their skills in music and opening communication lines.

[Title] => Strengthening DepEd's English program
[Summary] => The proposed law on the English language principally authored by Congressman Eduardo R. Gullas and approved recently by the House is entitled An Act to Strengthen and Enhance the Use of English as the Medium of Instruction in Philippine Schools. If passed into a law it will dismantle the 30-year bilingual program of DepEd aimed at creating a citizenry competent in the use of English and Filipino. Adopted on the basis of a mere administrative fiat, that program was a faulty measure right from the start.

[Title] => Carabao English - a rejoinder
[Summary] => I join the concern of The FREEMAN in its editorial two days ago on the "carabao" English of most Filipino college graduates. Quoting a report from Europe, it says that 75 percent of the almost half a million college finishers every year have dim prospects of employment mainly for lack of adequate communication skills in English.

[Title] => A trip to the Waldorf
[Summary] =>
No, I dont mean the swanky hotel, but hang on. Thanks to an invitation from our editor-in-chief Isaac Belmonte and his wife Isa (who had been my student in Diliman quite a few years ago), I sat in on a very interesting meeting the other Saturday a meeting that, for a pleasant change, had little to do with the crying concerns of the moment, but rather with the question of what to teach and how best to teach our high school students.
