"The informal sector will grow bigger," Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI) president Sergio Ortiz Luis Jr. said in an interview.

He pointed out that the increase in salaries will force industries to cut costs by downsizing or worse, close the business altogether. This, he said, will in turn translate to more people losing their jobs.

The chamber approved the measure before Congress went on its three-week Christmas break on Dec. 16.

Under the bill, minimum wage earners would be given a salary increase of P125 a day spread over three years: P45 in the first year, P40 in the second and another P40 in the third year, minus any amount that the regional wage boards have granted.

ECOP president Rene Soriano said the bill’s passage into law could force foreign investors to leave and transfer their business elsewhere in Asia.
