Well, hoo-hah! This Manila-born-and-bred writer (at least until his mid-20s) has just entered the rolls of Manilas finest. Of honored artists, that is.
On Friday the 20th of June, not so humbly did we stand among the ranks of creative individuals chosen to receive the Patnubay ng Sining at Kalinangan awards as part of the serial activities celebrating the 432nd anniversary of the Noble and Ever Loyal City.

First off, our longtime buddy Luis Francia has received the 2002 PEN Center Open Award for his book of essays, Eye of the Fish: A Personal Archipelago (Kaya Press, 2001), which we lavished with praise in this space last year.
The New York-based Francia is on a princely roll. A special evening at UCLA has been arranged to celebrate the book and its author on May 2.

Angela Narciso Torres, poet from San Francisco, visited Manila last June and read before my poetry workshop class in Ateneo. Her brief talk on her very promising vocation as a poet was also well-received by the class.
