The city had grown by leaps and bounds in the two decades since the Americans took over. The scars of the Spanish-American-Filipino war had healed, business was booming and numerous edifices were being put up to accommodate this expanded commercial activity.

Carlos Celdran, HCS development officer said all officials of the agencies working on the final design of the CCM building want the structure to be as classical as the five-story building of Manila City Hall.

[Summary] => Manila Mayor Lito Atienza said the city government is now closely coordinating with the National Historical Institute (NHI) on the immediate construction of the City College of Manila (CCM) at the historical Mehan Gardens.
Atienza said he is trying to finalize the design of the CCM building, which will soon rise at the Mehan Garden along Arroceros street, near the Central station of the Light Rail Transit (LRT).
The mayor said the project would surely help the city government provide quality education to poor but deserving children in the country’s capital.

Over 50 years ago this month, Manila was liberated from the Japanese. The city was devastated and over a hundred thousand lives were lost in the crossfire. Soon after, it started to rebuild. It became increasingly apparent though that the reconstruction effort was driven mainly by narrow-minded concerns of business – those of post-war market forces, and not according to a rational layout. This had already been prepared based on a 1941 metropolitan-wide master plan.

This month, 57 years ago, the American Armed Forces swooped down on Manila to "liberate" the city from the Japanese. The battle was a bloody one ... and most of the blood spilled was Filipino. The battle for Manila was, according to military historians, the only major "urban" battle the Americans fought in the Asian theater of World War II. (Think Blackhawk Down, but a thousand times more brutal as the carnage lasted about one month and casualties ran into hundreds of thousands.)
