DAVAO CITY---Residents in the mining villages of Masara and Mainit in Compostela Valley were ordered to evacuate after these were struck by twin landslides over the weekend that claimed the lives of 20 people, while 29 others were injured and six more were declared still missing.

According to Southern Mindanao regional police director Andres Caro II, the Mining and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) has recommended that Barangays Masara and Mainit should be immediately   abandoned and declared uninhabitable following the two massive landslides.

"The place is no longer suitable for people to live in," Caro said.

Over 350 families have reportedly been evacuated to safer grounds while several others opted to remain in the area despite the onslaught of boulders and mud due to incessant rains in the past few days.
