ILIGAN CITY -- Thirty-three rebels and three soldiers have been killed in five
days of fierce fighting between government forces and Moro Islamic Liberation
Front (MILF) guerrillas for control of Marugong town in Lanao del Sur.

The offensive, involving planes, helicopter gunships, and artillery, came three
days before the government and the MILF were to resume peace talks.

MILF rebels have occupied Marugong for the past two months after Vice Mayor
Malapandi Cossain, who is an MILF commander, had ousted Mayor Abdulwahid
Maruhom.

COTABATO CITY - Lawmen yesterday found a powerful homemade explosive rigged by
suspected Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) rebels on a bridge in Kabacan,
North Cotabato, in what could have been the second attempt to explode a bomb in
the town in a week.

Senior Superintendent Alex Paul Monteagudo, North Cotabato police director,
said they had to close to traffic the portion of the Cotabato-Davao Highway in
Katidtuan, Kabacan, where the bridge is located, for several hours.

"It is very obvious that this is another attempt to terrorize the province,"
Monteagudo said.

Malacanang rejected yesterday calls from several Mindanao congressmen for
President Estrada to halt the military offensive against the separatist Moro
Islamic Liberation Front (MILF).

However, Executive Secretary Ronaldo Zamora said the administration is
committed to the peaceful settlement of the war in Mindanao.

"We're going to clear Central Mindanao of many armed groups," he said. "We have
only one armed force in Central Mindanao and that would be the Armed Forces of
the Philippines.
