[Title] => Ray Conniff ends an era
[Summary] => It was a rock and roll world while I was growing up but there were three easy listening albums that left me distinct impressions during the ’60s. One was Manhattan Tower by Gordon Jenkins. A homage to New York City, it was an original recorded musical which pioneered an idea later very effectively put use by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice for Jesus Christ Superstar. Record the musical first. Then do the stage version.

[Summary] => I do not know if he ever recorded as Edward Miller but way back in the ’70s Emy Munji played the piano for several albums as Ian Hero. It was a time when original Filipino music and artists were just beginning to win acceptance among the colonial-minded masses but there was still no way for a record company to market a Filipino pianist performing foreign top 40 material.

[Summary] => That piece on Manhattan Tower resulted in two different reactions. One came from those inquiring where they can get a copy of the Gordon Jenkins album. I am sorry to say I do not know. I checked the web but the only albums of Gordon Jenkins songs available contain only selections from Manhattan Tower and not the complete musical. All I had until a few years ago was a tape that a friend of mine made from his own copy. Then I was able to get the LP from fellow Star columnist Mel Tobias who has since moved to Canada.
