Malana, according to Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Civil Relations Service (CRS) group commander Maj. Michael Samson, was rescued by the military in December 2000. After his rescue, Malana was turned over to the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) so that he could start a new life.
