[Title] => Lanao Sur mayor shot
[Summary] => MARAWI CITY — A Lanao del Sur mayor was shot and wounded yesterday morning just before the local court was to render its decision on an electoral protest which his rival in the 2004 elections had filed.

The police refused to give any statement, except to say that Mayor Mohammad Ali Merkano Abinal of Marantao town was attacked before Judge Hadji Macaundas Rasul could hand down his decision on the poll protest filed by Jimmy Guro.

Abinal is now in the intensive care unit of the Mercy Hospital in Iligan City.

Mohammadali Abboh Abinal, mayor-elect of Marantao, Lanao del Sur, faces the prospect of not having a municipal hall when he assumes office on June 30.

The reason: the municipal building — along with the police station, too — stands on the property which the family of his rival, Jimmy Guro, owns.

Guro, who Abinal trounced in the May 10 elections, is a brother of third-termer Mayor Manggay Guro who ran — and lost — in Lanao del Sur’s second district congressional race.
