The PSE study is based on the indices of selected exchanges in Asia at the end of 2006, as well as their market capitalization and turnover as of November 2006. The ranking excluded the two stock exchanges in China, which are enjoying phenomenal growth and are leading in almost all aspects of the race among Asian bourses.

In its position paper filed at the House of Representatives, the PSE said the proposed measure would result in the withdrawal by the Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) and Social Security System (SSS) of all their investments in the stock market within one year from its enactment into law.

PSE data showed that value turnover climbed 92.4 percent to P40.503.4 billion last month compared with P21.050 billion in Jan. 2004.
