Officials of the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) said yesterday the regulatory body did not issue an order stopping trunk radio operator Infocom Communications Network Inc. from providing cellular telephone service.

Infocom has never provided cellular phone service so there is no need to order it from doing so, the NTC officials said.

The interconnection dispute between Smart Communications Inc. and Nextel of Infocom Communications Network Inc. is likely to drag on despite the lapse of the 30-day period given by the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) for both parties to temporarily resolve the issue.

NTC Commissioner Joseph Santiago, however, gave assurance that interconnection would take place by middle of next month despite a motion for reconsideration filed by Smart last week.

"Although this is not yet final and executory, definitely they will still have to be interconnected by mid-February. The National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) is set to implement within the first half of the year the long-delayed revised guidelines governing interconnection among networks of various carriers.

This was the assurance given by NTC Commissioner Joseph Santiago during the Telecom cluster meeting.

The regulatory body recently conducted a workshop where it drafted the revised interconnection implementing rules and regulations (IRR) in an attempt to minimize disputes among the different parties involved.
