As proposed, the IPPAs will handle Napocor’s contracts with a total capacity of 4,221 megawatts (MW).

Of the 10 IPPs, Mirant Philippines, the country’s largest private power producer, has committed to light up the most number of barangays with 1,500 under the DOE’s rural electrification program.

To date, Mirant has already electrified 1,000 barangays. The remaining 300 barangays are expected to be given electricity within the year and another 200 barangays by next year.

(Napocor) president Jesus N. Alcordo said yesterday that the $800-million Ilijan Natural Gas Combined Cycle Power Plant project will operate in time for its end-October deadline.

"We hope that Ilijan will be able to operate in time for the first flow of natural gas from the Malampaya platform (in Northern Palawan)," Alcordo said.

The Napocor chief said they have committed to complete the project by January 2002 in time for the commercial operation of Malampaya natural gas.
