                    [Summary] =>

The Senate Electoral Tribunal allowed her to keep her seat in Congress, but Sen. Grace Poe has lost the initial round in her attempt to run for president next year. Near the close of office hours the other day, the Second Division of the Commission on Elections ruled to disqualify Poe from the presidential race, citing her failure to meet residency and citizenship requirements.

The Comelec did what it had to do -- disqualify Grace Poe as a candidate for president in the 2016 elections. As a constitutional body, it cannot but abide by what the Constitution requires of those who seek the highest post in the land, which is that only natural-born citizens can be elected president. Poe is a foundling and as such her parents cannot be determined.

All of a sudden, the camp of Senator Grace Poe no longer seems so sure about her legal standing in relation to the disqualification case filed against her by losing 2013 senatorial candidate Rizalito David.

The charges filed against Senator Grace Poe questioning her citizenship and her residency must have gotten under her skin because she is now responding to the questions in media, instead of waiting for her turn at the proper forum and there tell her side of the story. The latest report is that Poe is asking Rizalito David, the man who sued her, where he got the P50,000 to pay the filing fee. She is now going after David instead of what he has to say.

So focused has everyone become on the issue of presidential cheating in the last election that no one seems to care enough about what, if cheating is in fact proven, it can say about all of us Filipinos.

Aquilino Pimentel Jr. urged yesterday defeated presidential bet Fernando Poe Jr. to carefully weigh all factors involved in the filing of an electoral protest before the Presidential Electoral Tribunal (PET) for his efforts not to go down the drain.

More importantly, Poe should keep in mind the huge cost of pursuing an election complaint, said Pimentel, who ran and won under Poe’s ticket in the last elections.

The peso-for-Poe campaign offered by his grassroots supporters to fund his electoral protest will not be enough, the senator noted.
