Each of the 148,000 members of the Philippine National Police (PNP) will finally have their own handguns with the approval of a $1.198-billion (about $28.76 million) weapons supply contract, senior police officials said today.

Several times in the past there have been reports that members of the Philippine National Police lack service firearms. The problem persists, as PNP officials disclosed the other day. Of 125,000 PNP members, only 51,242 have handguns.
