[Title] => Prosecute officers of ill-fated vessel, justice department told
[Summary] => Transportation and Communications Secretary Pantaleon Alvarez has made strong recommendations to the Department of Justice for the prosecution of the captain and chief mate of the ill-fated vessel M/V Asia South Korea.
This, after the joint investigating panel of the DOTC, Maritime Industry Authority (Marina) and Coast Guard found the two merchant marine officers grossly negligent in navigating through rock formations that dotted the waters off Bantayan Island in Cebu. The overloaded vessel sank while en route to Iloilo on Dec. 23, 1999.

[Title] => Survivors: Ship's crew hid us from Coast Guard inspectors
[Summary] =>
CEBU - At least 20 survivors of the ill-fated MV Asia South Korea said in sworn
statements that the crew hid them in the cargo area and inside cabins when the
Coast Guard conducted a second headcount before clearing the vessel.
But Pepito Suello, a lawyer-member of the special marine board of inquiry, said
that unless the 20 survivors testify before the board, their allegations would
remain hearsay.
As expected, officials of the ill-fated ship denied hiding the passengers.
The 20 survivors from Iloilo will be asked to appear before the board early
next month.
