Environment and Natural Resources Secretary Angelo Reyes has directed all DENR regional offices to identify the coral reefs within their respective jurisdictions that are at risk or are already infested with the "crown of thorns", a kind of starfish.

Environment Secretary Angelo Reyes yesterday warned the public, particularly people in coastal areas, against an outbreak of giant starfish that destroy marine ecosystems with their voracious appetite for coral.


The crown of thorns starfish (acanthaster planci), can grow up to 20 feet across and have an insatiable appetite for the coral reefs that provide breeding grounds and sanctuaries for small fish.

In a memorandum circular, issued last April 12, Secretary Reyes also instructed the directors to identify coral reefs that are at risk or are already infested with the starfish. 


Reyes further asked the directors to organize and enlist the assistance of concerned groups or people in removing the destructive starfish from coral reefs.
