Today is the 116th anniversary of the famous Tres de Abril uprising by the Cebuano-based Katipuneros led by Pantaleon “Leon Kilat” Villegas, who hailed from Bacong, Negros Oriental. One hundred sixteen years ago, a small bunch of Katipuneros led by Pantaleon "Leon Kilat" Villegas who hailed from Bacong, Negros Oriental bearing a letter from the Katipunan leadership convinced many Cebuanos that the time had come to rise up against the Spaniards that has ruled our land for four hundred years. The call for revolution became stronger after the execution of Dr. Jose Rizal in Bagumbayan on Dec. 30, 1896.

Today is supposedly the 67th anniversary of Philippine independence because way back in my high school days at the University of San Carlos (USC) Boy’s High School (BHS) it was a momentous day when the nation would be holding parades and marches to commemorate the day when the United States brought down the American Flag and then President Manuel Roxas raised up the Philippine Flag… or was that event a mere footnote in Philippine history? Perhaps the US Embassy should remind us.
