[Title] => Misas de Aguinaldo
[Summary] => Since Miguel Lopez de Legaspi celebrated the first feast of the Nativity of the Lord in the Philippines in 1565, Christmas has been the longest and best loved festivity of the Filipinos. In preparation for the Nativity, a novena is started on December 16th and this is known as the Misas de Aguinaldo, or Gift Masses. The Misas de Aguinaldo started in Mexico when, in 1587, Fray Diego de Soria, prior of the Convent of San Agustin Acolman, petitioned the Pope for permission to hold Christmastide Masses outdoors because the church could not accommodate the multitude that attended the services.

[Title] => Origins of Christmas
[Summary] => Nowadays, people have to look at the calendar to know when the moon will be new, full or on its first and last quarter. So very few people realize that today is the December solstice, the time the sun reaches its extreme southern point. Three days from now, the sun will begin to rise higher in the sky, a great event that in the ancient Roman calendar was called Natalis Solis Invicti, the birthday of the Unconquered Sun. That was the pagan feast that was Christianized as the Feast of the Nativity after the introduction of Christianity.

[Title] => Predawn Masses signal start of RP Christmas
[Summary] => In most countries, Christmas is from the Eve of the Nativity till the Epiphany. In the Philippines, the Christmas season officially starts on December 16 to the Feast of the Three Kings that is now commemorated on the first Sunday of January. In Tagalog, it is known as simbang-gabi, (night Masses). But its original Spanish name is Misas de Aguinaldo, or Gift Masses. It is a custom that we got, not from Spain, but from Mexico, where it started in 1587.
