The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) announced that it is set to file the candidacy of Santiago for one of the 14 seats in a UN international tribunal.

Siazon announced yesterday that he has instructed the Philippine mission in New York to submit Santiago’s application.

The tribunal will be established by the UN next year for the prosecution of human rights violations committed in the former Yugoslavia and in Rwanda.

Foreign Secretary Domingo Siazon denied yesterday that he ever said outgoing Presidential Spokesman Fernando Barican was unfit to become an ambassador.

This was the tart response of outgoing Presidential Spokesman Fernando Barican to the comment of Foreign Secretary Domingo Siazon that the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) is not an employment agency.

Barican is reportedly being eyed for the post of ambassador to either Indonesia or Argentina.

Siazon was quoted as saying the DFA was not an employment agency, and that an ambassadorial assignment for either Barican or Tourism Secretary Gemma Cruz-Araneta -- also reportedly on the way out -- would be a "demotion."
