                    [Summary] =>

I was surfing cable channels last Saturday evening when I chanced upon a live report of CNN from Taipei. The Koumintang candidate for president was conceding the election. Apparently, it was officially announced a few minutes earlier that the opposition candidate China hates most has won the election.

What I found amazing here is the speed by which they counted the votes. It was just about eight in the evening of Saturday and there they were, with the final results for an election held that day. I found that amazing, almost unbelievable. It is an old story in the US. Internet-related stocks have been the darlings of the market for more than a couple of years now. And the way the market values these stocks defy traditional ways of recognizing value. Amazon dot com, the on-line bookseller, has made billions for its founder and early stockholders in the stock market. But the company itself still has to earn its first dollar in net income.

The trend has come to Asia. Perhaps the regional financial crisis delayed its coming, but now it is here. The P155 million cut inflicted on the budget of the University of the Philippines may not seem much to a senator or a congressman looking at about a hundred billion pesos in deficit. But taken together with similar cuts in the budget of the Department of Education, we may have reason to fear what the future holds for our children.

Okay, I am an alumnus of the State University but outside of that, I have no axe to grind. None of my children are studying at UP.
