The Development Bank of the Philippines (DBP) has denied they are not lending out the money for the development of the country’s maritime industry, reacting to news that the Japanese funders were disappointed with slow disbursement of P8.6 billion grant.


For months, DBP has been in the receiving end of criticisms, with Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) writing a letter to the bank to urge it to move the loan faster.

The National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) will ask for an additional $1 billion funding from the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC) for the modernization of the domestic shipping industry, a top economic official said.


"We are trying to see how committed JBIC is," Socioeconomic Planning Secretary and NEDA director general Romulo Neri said yesterday in an interview.


He explained that the proposed funding is over and above the 27th yen loan package extended by JBIC to the Philippines.

The Philippines has the potential of becoming a maritime power in the Southeast Asian region provided government gains headway  in further modernizing the industry, a top economic manager said.


In an interview, Socioeconomic Planning Secretary Romulo L. Neri said it makes sense for the country to be a major player in the industry due to the existence of a huge  shipyard in Cebu. The shipyard currently has 4,000 employees and there are plans of expansion to almost double the capacity.
