What sense then does one make of a place where almost 15,000 children were kept, with or without their parents, where they were regularly beaten, fed "warmed up water with a salty or a coffee flavor", where they daily saw death around them and lived with the knowledge that any day they could die or be sent away to certain death?

Last year, Israel sent out a brilliant piano duo for the same occasion.

The Seeds of Sun, consisting of vocalist Michael Cohan, flutist Mettan Klein and pianist Yoav Polachek, under the auspices of the Israeli Embassy headed by Ambassador Yehoshua Sagi, regaled an audience at the Inter-Con ballroom with Israeli jazz and international hits.

Yet, at the Galleria Duemila, they drew riveting admiration.

However, the dolls referred to here, albeit stunningly beautiful, are not living, breathing dolls but stuffed ones. Described as "shapes of prayer" and "embodiments of love", the dolls have come from Japan for exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Manila as part of the Philippine-Japan Festival 2001 celebration.
