By late 1930s, there were 1,053 British residents in the Philippines. One of the residents was George Hugh Winston Churchill, a distant cousin of the former British prime minister. Churchill arrived in Manila to join Asiatic Petroleum in 1930 at the age of 24. After spending three months in the lubricating oils department in Manila, Churchill took the number two position in Iloilo, under another Englishman John Sargeant, who was then the branch manager. There he stayed until 1934 and sailed

	back to England on home leave.
