In mid 2014, having just done Full Gallop, the Philippine Educational Theater Association (PETA) and director Loy Arcenas invited me to play the lead matriarch in a Filipino adaptation of Anton Chekov’s The Cherry Orchard. Admittedly, I was reluctant and intimidated by the prospect.

This is horrible since I write to buy couture. The only creative thing that I have been able to muster so far was the flimsy excuses that I offered my patient editor on why I have been without a Sunday piece. And mind you, those were delivered without a glaze of wit, just desperation.

Isn’t that what sophomores are sometimes assigned to do in the classroom by their drama instructor? Reason enough to sit at the back of the room, catch a few winks to escape from an hour of boredom, wait for the bell to ring, and flee in relief when the agony is over.
