                    [Title] => Late-arriving stars save day for Net Spikers
                    [Summary] =>

MANILA, Philippines - Alyssa Valdez and Gretchel Soltones came rushing in from various points to deliver the goods in time as Smart-Maynilad repulsed Philippine National Police, 17-25, 25-17, 25-20, 25-22, to bolster its Final Four bid in the Shakey’s V-League Season 10 Open Conference at The Arena in San Juan City yesterday.

Coming in late due to conflict in schedule with their studies, Valdez and Soltones checked in towards the end of the first set and failed to stop the Lady Patrolers. But the duo settled down in time to rally the Net Spikers to their second straight win in the carryover quarterfinal phase for a 6-3 card in the league sponsored by Shakey’s.

Smart-Maynilad remained in third behind semifinalists Cagayan Province (8-0) and Army (8-1) with the win serving as a big confidence-boost for its blockbuster duel with Cagayan tomorrow halfway through the quarters of the tournament backed by Mikasa and Accel.

Cagayan Province fought back from five points down in the deciding set and stole a 25-14, 16-25, 25-22, 23-25, 15-13 victory over a dejected Meralco side to preserve its unbeaten run later in the day.

Dragged into a five-setter for the first time after a streak of eight victories, the Rising Suns pounced on Meralco’s Chinese import Coco Wang’s error off the serve to break a 13-all count in the fifth then Aiza Maizo did what she does best, banging away the match-clinching spike as Cagayan frustrated Meralco and firmed up its bid for the top seeding in the Final Four.

It was a sorry setback for the Power Spikers, who seized the momentum with their fourth-set victory and took the first five points in the decider, only to wilt under pressure from the determined Cagayan squad.

Thai Kannika Thipachot unloaded 28 hits, including 25 on attacks, while Angeli Tabaquero and Maizo scored 21 and 16 hits, respectively, for the Rising Suns.

Meralco fell to its sixth loss against three wins and closer to Final Four elimination.

Meanwhile, the Smart-PNP match will be shown on GMA News TV Channel 11 today starting at 1 p.m. while the Cagayan-Meralco showdown will be aired on Monday.
