                    [Summary] => Waving Philippine and US flags and garbed in colorful traditional Muslim attire, hundreds of residents of Jolo, Sulu held a rally yesterday in support of a counterterrorism exercise involving US and Philippine troops.


Some of the 250 US troops participating in the annual joint military exercises called "Balikatan 2006" began arriving over the last few weeks.


The counterterrorism exercise, to begin later this month, will also focus on the delivery of medical and engineering services to Sulu, a stronghold of al-Qaeda-linked Abu Sayyaf militants.

Cocoy Tulawie, a local official leading the protest, said the humanitarian mission by American troops was a cover for counterinsurgency operations and amounted to US intervention in domestic affairs.
