[Title] => JBC hands off on Nazario appointment
[Summary] => The Judicial and Bar Council (JBC) said yesterday it has no control over the "appointment and recalled appointment" of Sandiganbayan Presiding Justice Minita Chico-Nazario to the Supreme Court.

Chief Justice Hilario Davide Jr. said the JBC’s role is to recommend candidates for the vacancy to President Arroyo, who must make her choice from the JBC short list.

"As chair of the JBC, our role is to transmit the list of nominees to the President and the President has the sole, exclusive prerogative to make the appointment," Davide said.

Bellosillo said he is not in a position to determine whether the case filed against them by the lawyers of deposed President Joseph Estrada will prosper or not.

With these words, acting Chief Justice Josue Bellosillo defended himself and seven of his colleagues in the High Tribunal yesterday from the impeachment complaint filed against them by ousted President Joseph Estrada.

"That can never happen, I think," Bellosillo said, when asked about who could replace the SC justices if the impeachment complaint prospered.

Bellosillo, who has the longest career record–30 years–in the judiciary, avoids media interviews and when cornered by this writer, was a reluctant subject.
