There was, of course, the chance to get away from the hustle and bustle of Metro Manilas dizzying traffic. There was also the chance to get treated to a unique chauffeur-driven experience care of my hosts for the stay, Nissan Rent A Car. Finally, and most importantly, through the efforts of The STARs counterpart in Cebu, The Freeman, and its ever-helpful staff, I was able to touch base with most of the legitimate auto industry players from the Queen City of the South. If you go around the metropolis, you know what Im complaining about its the summer break, there are no classes, yet the streets are clogged. There are supposedly less cars on the road because of the school break, yet traffic moves at a snails pace or even stops to a standstill, especially at EDSA and major thoroughfares.

Every year, about 100,000 Filipino high school seniors take the University of the Philippines College Admission Test (UPCAT), hoping to get into one of UP’s 10 campuses nationwide. It’s an annual ritual that’s been taking place since 1968, except for a brief period during the pandemic when the test was replaced by an alternative system. (I didn’t even realize until I looked these figures up that I was among the third batch of UPCAT takers in 1970; thankfully I got in.)
