BANGUED, Abra – After he was accused of masterminding the ambush-killing of six supporters of Lagayan Mayor Cecille Luna last Friday, Gov. Vicente Valera turned the tables on her yesterday, claiming that the victims belonged to her private army.

Valera and Luna are pitted against each other in the race for Abra’s lone congressional district.

Luna has openly tagged Valera in the killing of her supporters, which the governor has denied. She also implicated him in a previous attempt on her life.

Lt. Col. Juanito Dalmas, commander of the Army’s 17th Infantry Battalion based here, admitted that it is a standard practice of New People’s Army (NPA) guerrillas to "forage" for food in the mountains and in communities near their camps.

But police sightings of rebels, Dalmas said, confirmed that the insurgents have unusually heightened their "food collecting activities" in the Cordilleras.
