COTABATO CITY — The last of the 20 fishermen seized by Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) rebels in Midsayap, Cotabato province last week was released at dawn Sunday without any ransom.


Superintendent Chino Mamburam, Midsayap police chief, said the rebels freed Tio Salendab, 40, after he convinced them that his family could not afford the M-16 rifle which they demanded for his freedom.


Relatives of Tio have relayed to Commander Samal Masgal that they could not raise the money to buy an M-16 rifle, he added.

COTABATO CITY — Suspected Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) guerrillas snatched 20 fishermen in Midsayap, North Cotabato on Wednesday.


Police said the rebels freed 19 of their captives and promised to release the remaining hostage in exchange for an M-16 rifle.


Superintendent Chino Mamburam, Midsayap police chief, said the 19 freed hostages claimed they were abducted by MILF rebels.

MIDSAYAP, North Cotabato – Less than half of the almost 6,000 Muslim and Christian evacuees displaced by rebel-military encounters here have returned to their villages.  


Ramil Timan, chairman of Barangay Mudseng where soldiers and Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) rebels figured in running gunbattles last Jan. 25 to 27, said Mudseng has since remained a "ghost town," because evacuees were reluctant to return to their homes due to marauding Moro gunmen reportedly bent on grabbing their lands.

COTABATO CITY – Two Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) rebels were killed while a soldier was wounded in renewed hostilities in Midsayap, North Cotabato on Sunday.


Lt. Col. Julieto Ando, spokesman of the Army’s 6th Infantry Division, said the encounter in Barangay Mudseng in Midsayap erupted when MILF rebels opened fire on soldiers sent to verify the presence of a band of heavily armed bandits in the area.


Ando said two rebels were killed.
