In "Glorious", Repertory Philippines'' current onstage presentation, Joy Virata portrays a diva who can’t carry a tune. It is a feat for a highly musical soprano like Joy to sing off-key, and she "triumphs" as Florence Foster-Jenkins each time she does, with the unwavering support of loyal friends — Dorothy, her admirer St. Clair Byfield, and piano accompanist Cosme McMoon who desperately tries to evade telling her about her inadequacies for fear of offending her.

After my friend Robbie’s "	very joyful directorial "	debut with Repertory "	Philippines’ Gaybirds — and my sorrowful stupidity for having missed Song and Dance — something glorious this way comes as Rep presents the newest offering of its 70th theatrical season, aptly titled Glorious! It’s a comedy based on the life and times of tone-deaf opera diva and socialite soprano Madame Florence Foster-Jenkins.

The libretto by Ricky Lee is based on his own screenplay for the acclaimed movie directed by the late Ishmael Bernal, National Artist for Cinema, and starring Nora Aunor as the barrio lass who claims to have been given the gift to heal the sick by the Virgin Mary. The film might have been inspired by a Mexican production about a young woman in a remote village who acquires the power to heal after a heavenly visitation.
