[Title] => The value of a PhD
[Summary] => I usually write about fountain pens, computers, movies, cheap weekend getaways, and the kind of featherweight fluff that many readers seem to think culture and lifestyle writers should confine themselves to, but since nothing serves, reflects, and promotes culture better than education, I’m going to deal with a hot topic in higher education this Monday and the next — also and precisely because it’s very rarely that ordinary readers get a glimpse into the inner workings of academia.

[Title] => Al Jazeera On Panay Avenue
[Summary] =>
The closer you get to the front-lines, the closer you are to Al Jazeera. This is the line that comes into my head while interviewing broadcast journalist Marga Ortigas, one of a two-person Al Jazeera bureau team in the Philippines (the other being British cameraman Brendan Ager), with offices at the ABS-CBN compound along Panay Avenue, Quezon City. Its been awhile since we had seen Marga on TV, and now here she is in person ambling into Starbucks in the compound shortly before 1 p.m., taking a break from hectic preparations for the ASEAN non-summit in Cebu.
