Six hundred traffic enforcers of the Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) are now manning major roads and streets armed with camera-equipped cellular phones.


MMDA Chairman Bayani Fernando said they were issued cellular phone units that can shoot pictures and send them instantly and directly to MMDA Metrobase.

"With the technology available, we cannot afford to be primitive lest we outlive our purpose in life," he said as he announced the success of his MMS-Aided Monitoring System (MAMS) project.

Agency officials said yesterday citizens can now use their camera phones to catch traffic enforcers engaged in extortion through bribery in the course of apprehending erring motorists.

They can also take snapshots of personnel sleeping on the job. The photos can send the pictures directly to MMDA Metrobase, where personnel will document the photo-aided report.
