It may be silly and presumptuous to introduce a book that hasn’t even been accepted yet for publication, but humor me as I compose this piece — here in my Umbrian hermitage about which I’ll write some other time — trying to justify why I just e-mailed a collection of my poems to a friend who just might be foolish enough to publish them.

Last week I promised to share a few paragraphs from my first Palanca-prizewinning story, “Agcalan Point,” which I saw again recently for the first time in 35 years.
