CH launches smart city project with Japanese fiber technology
CEBU, Philippines — The Cebu City government is taking a significant step in its digitalization efforts by integrating Japanese technology into its fiber loop infrastructure project.
City officials gathered yesterday to officially launch the "Smart City Project: Fiber Loop Infrastructure." The initiative is expected to enhance online communication, streamline e-governance services, and strengthen cybersecurity measures across the city.
Mayor Raymond Alvin Garcia reaffirmed his administration's commitment to ensuring that "no barangay is left behind" in the city's digital transformation.
This development follows the deployment of Japan-grade fiber technology by InfiniVAN, Inc., which aims to revolutionize Cebu City's digital infrastructure. According to the City’s Public Information Office, the project is poised to turn the city into a model for smart city development.
InfiniVAN plans to establish a fiber loop infrastructure that will digitally connect barangays, improve internet accessibility, and drive economic growth in Cebu City.
“This project makes technology accessible, inclusive, and transformative. We have already begun offering public WiFi in schools, parks, and playgrounds—a first in Cebu City’s history,” Garcia said.
City Councilor Jaypee Labella, chairperson of the City Council’s ICT Committee, highlighted the benefits of the fiber infrastructure, emphasizing its ability to deliver ultra-fast internet speeds, enable high-definition streaming, and minimize signal interference.
“This project serves as the backbone for improved government services, including online barangay clearance processing and e-payment systems,” Labella stated.
“This will propel Cebu City to new heights, opening new opportunities for progress and making it a digital leader in the Philippines,” he added.
Garcia also expressed his gratitude to all stakeholders for their collaboration with the city government in realizing its vision of becoming a top digital destination, where residents and businesses alike can thrive.
InfiniVAN Chairman Koji Miyashita echoed the mayor’s sentiments, stating, “We are creating a legacy of progress that will inspire generations to come.” — /FPL (FREEMAN)
