Senators take hats off to Eala

MANILA, Philippines — Sen. Christopher “Bong” Go has filed a resolution commending Filipino tennis star Alex Eala for her historic campaign in 2026 Wimbledon, where she became the first Filipina to win a singles main-draw match and the first Filipino in the Open Era to reach the tournament’s fourth round.
Go, chairman of the Senate committee on sports, filed Senate Resolution 493 yesterday, citing Eala’s achievements as source of national pride and inspiration to young Filipinos.
Meanwhile, Sen. Panfilo Lacson said Eala remained “a true champion” despite failing to advance to the quarterfinals.
“Alex Eala didn’t disappoint us with her loss in the fourth round of the Wimbledon Championships. Failure is not measured by one defeat. She continues to inspire and motivate our youth who dare to dream big beyond their means. That makes her a true champion,” Lacson said in a post on X.
Lacson also reiterated his earlier description of Eala as “the detoxifier” the country needs amid political divisions, saying her success had lifted the Filipino spirit and united the nation behind her historic Wimbledon campaign.
