Retro Run Reloaded: A 'side hustle with a purpose' hits the UPLB streets

MANILA, Philippines — The canopy-lined streets of University of the Philippines Los Baños came alive as a thousand participants joined Retro Run Reloaded. The event was the sequel to last September’s Retro Run 2000. Building on that momentum and driven by popular demand, the organizers expanded the event this year.
A reunion of skillsets
The work behind Retro Run Reloaded happened behind the scenes. The nine-member organizing team, made up of different "cliques" back in high school, reunited from a range of current professions and day jobs. Some are in the private sector, others in government and a few focus full-time on family.
For the organizers, the project became a "side hustle with a purpose." It gave them a break from daily routines and a chance to revive interests in event planning, marketing and creative design. It also became an outlet to reconnect with the energy of working toward a shared goal. The event served as a reminder that it is never too late to pursue a passion while giving back to the community that raised them.
Beyond the finish line
That same spirit of collaboration extended beyond the organizing team. Retro Run Reloaded aimed not only to take participants back to the 90s and 2000s through music, outfits, and festive vibes, but also to reach beyond the campus gates.
What started as an alumni fundraising effort has grown into a community celebration. By tapping local businesses as event partners and concessionaires, the organizers turned the race village into a showcase for the UPLB community.
The run, which brought in first-time visitors, also introduced many to the campus as a destination for fitness and recreation.
The fun run series has a record of results. Last year’s Retro Run 2000 raised funds for the UPRHS Class of 2000, the Silver Jubilarians of the school’s 96th Alumni Homecoming. The 2025 run raised funds to fully furnish a Senior High School classroom in UPRHS.
This year, "Reloaded" shifted its focus to health and wellness, with proceeds earmarked for sports equipment to support the UPRHS Physical Education and varsity programs.

As the final runners crossed the finish line beneath the acacia trees of University of the Philippines Los Baños, Retro Run Reloaded proved to be more than a reunion. It became a reminder that community spirit—and youthful passion—can still find new purpose years later.
