PSC chairman Patrick Gregorio and former Senate Majority Leader Francis Tolentino delivered inspiring messages during the recent third Pacquiao-Elorde Awards Night at Okada Manila, particularly leaving an impactful impression on the minds of aspiring athletes dreaming of achieving greatness in sports.

Gregorio, who received the Distinguished Ring Award, was welcomed on stage by boxing icon Manny Pacquiao who conceived the idea of celebrating the country’s sports heroes, past and present, with the Elorde family. A star-studded audience witnessed the event with former world boxing champions, including ex-WBC lightflyweight ruler Rolando Pascua, recognized for their feats. Pascua, now 60, ended Mexican legend Humberto Gonzalez’ unbeaten win streak as an amateur and pro with a ninth-round stoppage at the Great Western Forum in Inglewood, California, in 1990. Pascua retired from boxing in 1999 after compiling a record of 45-25, with 17 KOs.

Gregorio paid tribute to the late Flash Elorde whom he described as more than a champion in the ring … he was a symbol of excellence, discipline and heart. “Flash Elorde’s legacy extends beyond his victories,” he said. “He demonstrated that true champions are defined not only by titles but by character, humility and service to others.”

Gregorio also cited Pacquiao for his extraordinary journey from humble beginnings to global icon. “Beyond, his unparalleled achievements in the ring, his enduring commitment to uplifting the sport and supporting the next generation of fighters continues to shape the future of Philippine boxing,” he said.

Gregorio said PSC remains steadfast in its commitment to Filipino boxers. “We are here to ensure that every Filipino athlete receives the support they need to excel on the world stage,” he noted. “From grassroots development to the professional ranks, your victories are the country’s victories and your triumphs bring pride to every Filipino. To our promoters, trainers and benefactors, thank you for your tireless work behind the scenes. Your sacrifices and dedication form the backbone of this industry. Without you, the success of our athletes would not be possible. To the awardees, congratulations. Your achievements inspire all the nation and remind us all of what Filipino talent and determination can accomplish. Let us continue to stand united in our mission to elevate Philippine sports to even greater heights.” In tomorrow’s column, we’ll summarize Sen. Tolentino’s message.
