MANILA, Philippines — Aidric Chan delivered a stunning late surge, punctuating a brilliant five-under 66 with a spectacular eagle to storm into joint second at the opening round of the Singapore Open on Thursday at Sentosa Golf Club’s famed Serapong course.

The young Filipino standout unleashed a booming 323-yard drive on the par-5 18th, setting up an eagle opportunity he confidently drained for a closing three — a statement finish that underscored both his composure and firepower under pressure.

Chan’s round was a showcase of resilience and shot-making. The golfer birdied two of his first five holes, recovered swiftly from a stumble on No. 6 with another birdie on the seventh, and kept himself in contention despite hitting just six fairways. His precision on approach, however, proved exceptional, finding 14 greens in regulation — a testament to his elite recovery skills on one of Asia’s most demanding layouts.

After a stretch of steady pars, Chan reignited his charge with a chip-in birdie on the par-3 14th before delivering his electrifying eagle finish. He needed just 29 putts to cap a round that combined patience, creativity, and clutch execution.

Chan shares third place with Charles Porter and Kieran Vincent at five-under, just two strokes behind Thailand’s Ekpharit Wu, who seized the early lead with a flawless 65 highlighted by four birdies in his last five holes.

Jeongwoo Ham had a six-under card with four holes to go at presstime.

The performance reinforces Chan’s growing stature following his breakthrough victory on the Asian Development Tour in Morocco last year. With his blend of power, touch, and poise, the Filipino rising star is increasingly shaping up as a serious contender on the regional stage — and perhaps beyond.

Meanwhile, Justin Quiban turned in a solid 70 to sit tied for 22nd, while Carl Corpus carded a 71 for a share of 28th. Veteran Angelo Que struggled to find rhythm, finishing with a 73 that left him in danger of missing the cut.
