Bolts trip Fuel Masters

MANILA, Philippines -- The Meralco Bolts dealt the Phoenix Fuel Masters their first defeat in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup, pulling away late en route to a 93-86 decision Saturday evening at the Ynares Center in Antipolo.
The Bolts rose to a 2-0 win-loss record, while Phoenix absorbed its first loss in the Charles Tiu era with a 2-1 slate.
Chris Banchero pushed the pace for Meralco with 17 points in 21 minutes off the bench, to go with four assists and four rebounds. Jason Brickman chipped in 16 markers, seven boards and five dimes.
A 3-pointer by Ef Escandor tied things up at 77-all with 9:47 remaining.
A 12-1 run capped by a 4-pointer by Bong Quinto broke the game wide open, 89-78, with 4:36 left.
James Dickey III then hit a deuce, but a pair of free throws by Chris Newsome, followed by a deuce by Brickman, pushed the lead to 13, 93-80, with 1:24 to go.
Evan Nelle’s 4-pointer, as well as Ken Tuffin’s layup, came a bit too late as these shots set the final score.
Marvin Jones had a solid double-double of 15 points and 15 rebounds for the Bolts. Newsome and CJ Cansino chipped in 11 and 10 markers, respectively.
Dickey had 28 points and 21 rebounds for the Fuel Masters, who played without Kai Ballungay. Ricci Rivero backstopped with 22 markers while Tuffin had 11.
