MANILA, Philippines — Reigning champion National U recovered in time to get back at University of the Philippines, 24-26, 25-17, 21-25, 25-18, 15-8, and regain its winning ways in UAAP Season 88 women’s volleyball yesterday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
The Lady Bulldogs clawed back from a 1-2 set deficit, including a flat 0-3 score in the rubber, to avenge their meltdown against the Fighting Maroons in the first round, 25-17, 25-16, 22-25, 29-31, 13-15.
NU returned to the winner’s circle at 6-2, keeping solo second spot behind unbeaten leader and rival La Salle (7-0) behind super rookie Sam Cantada’s career-best 32 points.
First-game winner Far Eastern U (5-3) moved to solo third after a 25-11, 25-15, 25-22 win over University of the East (0-8), slightly ahead of Final Four pursuers Santo Tomas and Adamson with similar 4-3 slates.
“We’re happy as we count all the wins and this is a good comeback for us. Hopefully, magtuloy-tuloy na siya,” said NU mentor Regine Diego. “It’s a challenging time for all the teams, kasi mas mataas na ‘yung pressure, mas kailangan ng manalo.”
