Lady Tamaraws ram through winless Lady Warriors

MANILA, Philippines — Far Eastern University vented its ire on the University of the East, trampling the Lady Warriors, 25-11, 25-15, 25-22, in their UAAP Season 88 women’s volleyball tournament Wednesday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
The Lady Tamaraws, who absorbed a three-set loss against University of Santo Tomas to finish off the first round, started the second round of the tournament strong as UE dropped its 22nd straight loss.
The Morayta-based spikers played without the injured Gerz Petallo, but that did not stop their charge to a huge victory, their fourth in the last five games.
Faida Bakanke powered through for the Morayta-based squad with 14 points on 12 attacks and two blocks, while Jaz Ellarina had 11 points.
After easy wins in the first two sets, the Lady Tamaraws experienced more pushback in the third set.
They were up by three, 16-13, after a block by Melody Pons.
But a service error by Bakanke, a service ace by Van Bangayan, and a quick by Kesha Famulagan tied things up at 16.
The two teams traded points, as FEU led by one, 21-20, after a block by Lovely Lopez.
Khy Cepada tried to tow UE back into it, but Bakanke scored the Lady Tamaraws’ next four points to finalize the win.
Pons had nine points for the winning team while Lopez had seven.
Khy Cepada powered UE with 15 points, with 10 digs and seven receptions. Famulagan chipped in six points.
FEU rose to a 5-3 win-loss record, while the Lady Warriors’ Final Four hopes dimmed as they slipped to a 0-8 slate.
