Negotiations ordered for Suarez title rematch with Navarrete

MANILA, Philippines — Filipino boxer Charly Suarez may be getting his long-coveted title rematch soon.
This, after the World Boxing Organization (WBO) pushed for the negotiations between Suarez and Unified WBO and IBF junior lightweight champion Emanuel Navarrete.
In a post on X, WBO president Gustavo Olivieri said that the WBO world championship committee unanimously voted to order the negotiations between the title holder and the number one world-rated contender and mandatory challenger.
“The parties are granted 20 days to reach terms,” he said.
“Failing an agreement, purse bid proceedings will be ordered in accordance with WBO regulations. The minimum bid for the junior lightweight (130 pounds) division is set at $150,000,” he added.
The minimum bid translates to about P9 million.
Suarez, last year, absorbed a technical decision loss to Navarrete, as the Mexican was cut above his left eyebrow during the match, supposedly due to an accidental headbutt.
A month later, however, the match was declared a “no contest” as the cut was deemed to be from a solid left straight by Suarez.
This then triggered the WBO to order an immediate rematch.
Since then, Suarez has been waiting for his rematch. And about two weeks ago, Navarrete took on Eduardo Nunez in a lightweight unification match, winning via 11th round stoppage to scoop up the International Boxing Federation version of the title.
