Poyos powers Tigresses over Fighting Maroons

MANILA, Philippines — Angge Poyos starred for University of Santo Tomas as the Golden Tigresses vented their ire on the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons in four sets, 16-25, 25-13, 25-19, 25-20 Wednesday at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
Poyos finished with 24 points on 20 attacks, three blocks and an ace for UST. Reg Jurado chipped in 16 markers while Jonna Perdido had 12.
The Tigresses, who dropped a three-set stunner against the Adamson Lady Falcons last time around, took advantage of the absence of Casiey Dongallo to grab the victory.
“Ginawa lang namin sa team, lalo nung second set, ginising namin sila. Then again, of course, ‘yung bawi talaga kasi kung titingnan natin, itong game na ito ang magdidikta kung ano ‘yung kapalaran namin sa first round,” UST assistant coach Yani Fernandez said after the win.
“’Yung tapang bumalik na, pero siyempre hindi pa rin kami magpapakampante doon sa performance nila. Still, mayroong mga kailangang trabahuhin.”
After dropping the first set, the Tigresses found their rhythm in the second, leading by 12, 24-12, after a Poyos kill.
An error by UST snapped the run, but a Kianne Olango attack error gave the Espana-based squad the set, 25-13.
And after pulling away late in the third set, UST closed out the match in the fourth set as they kept UP at arm’s length.
The squad led by just one, 15-14, but Lianne Penuliar, Xyza Gula and Poyos teamed up as the lead grew to five, 21-16.
Jelai Gajero tried to rally UP back into it, but finishing touches by Jonna Perdido and Avril Bron, as well as a service error by Jaz Manguilimotan, iced the match for the Tigresses.
Perdido had 12 points for the winning tea, while Cassie Carballo tossed up 18 excellent sets.
Nina Ytang and Gajero powered UP with 14 and 12 markers, respectively. Manguilimotan had 18 excellent sets.
UST forced a three-way tie at the fourth spot as the squad rose to 3-3, together with UP and Adamson, which absorbed a five-set loss against La Salle earlier in the day.
